Androxene ples of the devices that we are looking at and here in microfluidics helps because we need very low priming volume for these devices the baby's blood volume is probably around eighty two hundred microliters or so and so if your device for oxygenation consumes half that volume then you would have to inject new blood and that can be two additional complications and so on and what you want is a device that is very very small but which is capable of exchanging at least thirty percent of the capacity that a normal term baby's lungs would provide right and so we have been having some success in that in that area so these in general is sort of the broad view of where micro fluidics is applied and how it is it is useful what I'll be focusing on in this talk is this particular area of biofabrication so biofabrication is technologies that are being developed to assemble cells different types of cells with various combinations of extracellular matrices in a three dimensional form integrated with vascular networks so that we can mimic at least partially some of the functionalities that are treated three-dimensional tissue or operates in so I'll start with a historical view of how this area developed so it's sometimes it's called tissue engineering other times it's called bio fabrication and so on just to give you a perspective of what was done in different time frames and then arrived at what we are doing in my lab very recently so why biofabrication there are sort of three broad areas why you want to do this kind of thing one is in the area of drug discovery where people develop what is called organs on a chip and the idea being that if you can mimic s
